The waters of the Periyar river have been dammed up to form an artificial lake. The surrounding forests house the Periyar National Park. Exploring the lake by motor launch and boat, visitors can watch wild
elephants, deer, wild boar, and occasionally, even tigers that come down to the lake to drink or play in its waters. A wide variety of birds nest on the bare tree trunks thrusting out of the water.
