Transportation in Madurai City

Majority of the people use motorized two wheelers for transportation in and around the city limit. City buses are crowded during the peak hours and festival days. Town buses, suburban buses, taxis, auto rickshaws and cycle rickshaws are also available. There are no fare-meters normally in auto rickshaws and taxis, so fares and terms are negotiated beforehand. They accept only cash. Traffic inside the city is relatively okay, except for some confusions of "No Entry" or "One Way" signs at some places. New bridges have been constructed across the river Vaigai to connect the north Madurai and south Madurai to streamline the traffic flow. The heavy loading trucks and try cycles around the central market creates a big traffic congestion during the peak hours.
