Madurai City Guide
Madurai is a fascinating place
that buzzes with routine activities throughout the day and night. Its said that
Madurai is the cheapest city in India. Madurai never sleeps. The
63 Thiruvilayadals have taken place here. Tamil language grew and blossomed
through the Thamizh Sangams. During the Nayakkar regime, Madurai was the
cultural center for all the Tamils. During the freedom struggle, a lot of
important events like Mahatma Gandhi adopting his half dhoti, Temple entry by
the harijans etc. have happened here. Madurai was once the mighty capital
of the ancient Pandya Kingdom.

Madurai can be called the south
capital of Tamil culture, where the traditional arts grow and flourish. The
Tamil culture of hospitality is known the world over. Even the humblest
house-holder will welcome the unseen guests with some simple eatables and drinks
to offer. The people of Madurai are incredibly friendly with the brotherly way
of talking. The local slang would seem to be more affectionate language. Madurai
people can pick-up a thread of discussion with strangers easily.
Naturally, they have the helping tendency for others.
| People normally get up early in
the morning, religiously take their bath, offer their prayers after lighting the
lamps, create abstract patterns with flours at house entrances and pay their
visits to the temples. Though the city of Madurai has become an industrial,
commercial and educational center besides retaining its spiritual heritage. The
lifestyle is not so fast as any other city. Normal business hours are from
9.00am to 1.00pm and then again from 4.00pm to 10.00pm. People are cheerful
having plenty of time to relax. Crime rate is relatively lower.
Fresh and tastier South Indian
traditional food is a specialty of Madurai hotels, restaurants and
road-side fast food stalls. Some of the popular chain of hotels such as
"Madurai Saradha Mess", "Madurai Muniyandi Vilas",
"Ariya Bhavan" can be found all over the state - which stands
for its unique name in terms of taste and freshness. The food is cheap in
Madurai and available almost 24 hours a day, where one could take care of
their meals with their petite earnings at anytime. |

|
Madurai's streets were designed to
resemble a sacred lotus flower in full bloom. One glance at a map of the city
and the design is evident. On foot, even a casual observer will come to realize
that the streets are arranged in concentric circles, and that the circles fold
in on the center of the flower and the heart of all Madurai's activity - the
Meenakshi Sundareshwar Temple.
| Obviously, the old city plan with
narrow roads are no more capable of handling the grown heavy city traffic. The
city whirrs all through the day with heavy vehicular traffic, creating noise,
smoke & dust over the rain-shadowed city, autorickshaws, cycle-rickshaws and
tri-cycle peddlers cramming the busy market roads. but still, the city
attracts an increasing number of tourists as its filled with spiritual
soul with amazing attractions. The historical Madurai is now becoming a
modern Digital Madurai. |

biggest protestant church in South Asia. Cathedral lies between Narimedu
and Zumbropuram of Goripalayam area. It is very pleasant church. It
occupies more members at a time. The specialty of the church is there is
no pillars in between the roof area. It is very silence and spiritual
church. Each and every one of Madurai can proud of this Cathedral.

Plight of Madurai |
Name: Vijayaraj
Email: dtv_raj@hotmail.com |
Sir,
I was born and brought up in Madurai. I spent first 25 yrs of my life in Madurai with all its
splendors and blunders, it was a life of fragrance. Now I am settled in Chennai for the past 10 yrs, my soul is always at Madurai.
Most of
my relatives and friends are there, but of late, when I visit Madurai, I feel
very much annoyed of the conditions at my birth place for which I have great
respect. I dreamt when I left Madurai that in 10 yrs time it will be the second
developed city in the state in all fronts but instead of becoming a leading city
it has become a largest village with all of confusions.
Even though the city has developed geographically there is no visible development of the in city in the line of Kovai (Technically). Hope all the
people of Madurai will have this in their mind to may this city of
great history and tourist center to be an example for a full grown technical
city at least in the near future.
